Premature Aging
Avoid These Harmful Activities

To prevent premature aging of your skin and lower your risk of developing skin cancer, avoid tanning. Studies have shown that “broad spectrum ultraviolet radiation” produced by natural sunlight and tanning beds is a known carcinogen that causes skin cancer. A popular misconception in our society is that indoor tanning from sun beds is safer than outdoor tanning from natural sunlight. On the contrary, tanning beds emit dangerous levels of ultraviolet radiation and are considered a health risk. Arguing that tanning beds are safer than outdoor tanning is like arguing that filtered cigarettes are safer than nonfiltered cigarettes. The point is neither is safe. Tanning should therefore be avoided, as should sunburns, to help reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

So what’s a person to do? How can one acquire the look of a tan without the damage caused by tanning? I recommend using self tanning creams that can easily be applied to the skin to achieve a bronzed appearance. Many are available in drugstores and department stores. I have been pleased with Coppertone and Banana Boat self tanning creams.

My best advice for keeping your skin looking young and healthy is to avoid tanning, either by natural sunlight or tanning beds, and wear sunscreen daily. If you want the look of a tan, get it out of a bottle or have it sprayed on. Your skin will thank you in the long run.
