Facial shape, aging, genetics and certain life style choices such as smoking, prolonged sun exposure, excessive exercise and exposure to pollution all play a role on how one will age. Together, these factors result in diminished collagen, hyaluronic acid and fat production, decreased skin elasticity, decreased natural skin oiliness, reduced skin moisture retention and suppleness. The result of the slowed remodeling of these skin-tightening proteins causes your skin to thin, droop and lose elasticity—which often leads to winkles, furrows and fine lines.

As we continue to age, the bony skeleton shrinks resulting in less support for the overlying soft tissue and muscles.  The end results can be dramatic and include depressed temples, sunken eyes, droopier eyebrows, deeper tear trough, flatter cheeks, deep lines along the sides of the nose (laugh lines), thinner lips and a heavier jaw line. These changes make us look older, tired, and angry even if we are not.

Age spots are due more to sunning than aging. These spots—also called sunspots, brown spots or liver spots—are flat, uneven dark patches on the face, neck, chest, hands and arms and other areas that are regularly exposed to the sun. Though usually harmless, these blotchy brownish patches can make you look and feel older than you really are.

Facial redness develops from inflammation and from tiny dilated blood vessels at the surface of your skin. Sometimes the redness can be sudden, whereas other times it can develop slowly over many years. Facial redness creates an uneven complexion and contributes to an aged look.

Wrinkles are formed from habitual muscle contractions that crease the skin. As we age facial muscles get stronger and our collagen and elastin get weaker, creating the perfect combination for wrinkles.

To summarize, time and sun damage can show up on our face as wrinkles, uneven pigment, facial redness, and volume loss.
