What is PRP Therapy?

Audubon DermatologyPlatelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP therapy is a treatment that has been used in the medical field for many years. Researchers discovered that platelet-rich plasma in the blood contains growth factors that help the body heal naturally. It has been used after surgeries and as part of rehabilitation after injuries with great success. PRP injections have been adapted to cosmetic procedures to introduce the same healing powers of growth factors to remedy wrinkles, hair loss, and other aesthetic concerns.

How does PRP work for hair loss?

PRP therapy is a safe way for you to improve your hair density and growth. It involves a simple injection of your own platelets into the vascular layer of your scalp. Platelets contain healing growth factors. Those growth factors are like signal callers that give instructions to your tissue to regenerate and multiply. This discovery has led different fields of medicine to utilize PRP for wound healing to speed up recovery time and regrow healthier, stronger tissue. Now, doctors have discovered new benefits for hair thickening and regrowth. When PRP therapy is utilized for hair loss, your growth factors and stem cells work together to reverse the miniaturization of the hair follicle and jumpstart dormant hair back into the growth stage. This process results in increased blood supply to the follicle and increased hair shaft size. It may also trigger and maintain the growth phase while also controling the hair cycle.

Am I a candidate for PRP Therapy?

Almost anyone is a candidate for PRP therapy since it uses components of your own blood, so there are no concerns regarding an allergic reaction to the product. Dr. Hooper or Dr. Jackson will perform a detailed assessment to determine if PRP therapy would be the most beneficial treatment for you.

Where can PRP therapy be utilized?

PRP therapy can be used for the treatment of various cosmetic concerns, including hair loss, anti-aging and wrinkles. PRP can also be combined with Microneedling, which we refer to as LGR (Liquid Gold Rejuvenation) treatments.

How is PRP Therapy performed?

PRP injection therapy involves spinning a small amount of your blood in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other blood components. The PRP is then injected into the treatment area.

What is recovery like after PRP Therapy?

You may experience redness, localized swelling or slight tenderness at the injection site after PRP Therapy, but no downtime is expected.

How long will the results of PRP Therapy last?

The changes to your skin and hair from PRP injections are gradual. After a series of 3-4 treatments, annual maintenance treatments are recommended to maintain results. How long the results will last depends on other complementary therapies you receive, how quickly your skin changes, and the type of hair loss you are experiencing.
