What is Sculptra®?

Sculptra® is a biostimulatory filler composed of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), an FDA-approved, biocompatible, biodegradable material. Sculptra® is not a wrinkle filler, but a bio activator or “volumizer.” It works by stimulating the body to produce new collagen at the sites of injection, therefore replacing lost volume while also improving skin texture to restore a fuller, more youthful appearance. Sculptra® does not give results immediately. There is a time factor involved since the true volume effect is created by your own collagen, not the product itself. This collagen replenishment takes place over a period of several months. Patients usually receive two to four injection sessions spaced six weeks apart to accomplish optimum re-volumization.

Am I a candidate for Sculptra®?

The mechanism behind Sculptra® is proven effective for many patients, and the primary consideration is where you need anti-aging therapies that will benefit from increased collagen. Common areas of treatment with Sculptra® are various subunits of the cheeks, jawline, temple hollows, the buttocks and even the knees. Dr. Hooper and Dr. Jackson will perform a detailed analysis of your anatomy and determine if Sculptra® is the best treatment for you.

How is a Sculptra® treatment performed?

We apply a topical numbing agent 20-30 minutes before injections to ensure the most comfortable experience for our patients. Our Sculptra® also contains a premixed local anesthetic, increasing comfort during injection. Sculptra® is loaded into a sterile syringe and expertly injected by Dr. Hooper or Dr. Jackson.

What is recovery like after Sculptra® injections?

No downtime is expected after a Sculptra® procedure, but regular massaging of the injection site is necessary for five days after treatment to achieve optimal results. You may or may not experience mild redness, localized swelling, tenderness or bruising after injections. We recommend stopping any blood thinners not prescribed by a physician for 1-2 weeks before filler injections to decrease the risk of bruising. Examples of these are Aspirin, NSAIDS like Advil (Ibuprofen) or Aleve (Naproxen Sodium), Vitamin E, Fish Oil, Ginkgo, Green Tea, Garlic, Ginseng, St John’s Wort, and alcoholic beverages.

How long do results from Sculptra® last?

Results can last for 1 year or longer, depending on your metabolic rate and how quickly your body breaks down the new collagen.

Sculptra® for Body Contouring

Sculptra® can also be used to define and contour various curves of the body by adding fullness and smoothing tissue, simultaneously improving the quality of the overlying skin.
